What’s the difference between an Auckland villa and an Auckland Bungalow?
The terms “villa” and “bungalow” are regularly used to refer to the same thing. Many are unaware of the architectural nuisances separating the two styles of character homes. The victorian Villa first appeared in Auckland in the mid 19th century and was characterised by high ceilings, ornate awnings, little windows and a wide central hallway.
The bungalow was introduced to NZ after the villa in the early 20th century. It was so popular that is swiftly overtook the Villa as the prominent style of new home in Auckland at the time. The Californian Bungalow was more open plan than the villa and featured lower ceilings and exposed rafters. Window were also more expansive, letting in more light.
There are several variations of the Villa. The Bay Villa, the Square Front Villa and the Trans Villa. The Trans Villa was a combination of the Villa and the Bungalow with some villa owners renovating their villa to the California bungalow style.
